Using ChatGPT or AI to Write Your Resume (Without Sounding Fake)
AI chat tools like ChatGPT can help you draft and tighten resume bullets, but you must supply the real facts and check every line. Left alone, they tend to invent achievements and produce generic phrases that recruiters spot quickly.
We're not against AI. We're against sending something you haven't read. Here's a way to use it that actually helps.
Can ChatGPT build a resume?
It can write text for one, yes. It can't know your real job history, numbers or results. If you ask it for "a resume for a marketing manager", you'll get plausible-sounding filler. If you give it your actual facts and ask it to tighten them, you get something useful.
Think of it as an editor, not an author.
How do you use AI to write resume bullets?
- Write down the raw facts first. What you did, for whom, how often, what changed. Messy is fine.
- Paste them in with the job description and ask for a few bullet options.
- Pick and edit. Keep what's true. Delete what isn't.
- Add the numbers yourself. If it suggests a number you don't recognise, remove it.
A prompt that works:
Here are notes about my job as a customer support agent: [your notes]. Here's the job posting I'm applying for: [paste]. Rewrite my notes as 4 resume bullets that start with a past-tense verb, keep every fact exactly as I stated it, and don't add any numbers or tools I didn't mention.
That last instruction matters. Without it, AI will happily add "increased satisfaction by 40%".
What are the risks of AI-written resumes?
- Made-up details. Interviewers ask about what's on the page. If you can't explain a claim, you've got a problem.
- Generic wording. Phrases like "results-driven professional with a proven track record" are everywhere now, and recruiters skim past them.
- Same bullets as everyone. If many applicants use similar prompts, many resumes read alike.
- Privacy. Don't paste full addresses, ID numbers or confidential employer information into a chat tool. Check the tool's data policy.
How do you make AI-assisted text sound like you?
- Read it aloud. Anything you wouldn't say, rewrite.
- Replace vague words with specifics (names of tools, kinds of customers, sizes of teams).
- Cut adjectives. Results matter more than "dynamic" or "passionate".
- Vary the sentence openings.
- Keep one or two rough edges. A real person's resume isn't perfectly smooth.
What about resume builders with AI?
Some builders include AI suggestions. They're handy for first drafts, but the same rules apply: you're responsible for what's on the page. If you'd rather avoid AI altogether, that's reasonable too. Ours doesn't use AI. You type the text, we format it. You can try it here, or learn the structure in our guide to building a resume.
Should you tell employers you used AI?
There's no general rule. Some employers have policies about AI in applications, so read any instructions. Either way, the content must be accurate and yours.
FAQ
Is it okay to use ChatGPT for my resume?
Yes, as a drafting and editing aid. Make sure every statement is true and that you can explain it.
Will recruiters know my resume was written by AI?
Often, they can tell when it's generic or repetitive. Specific details and your own voice make a resume read as human.
What prompt should I use to write a resume?
Give the AI your real notes and the job description, ask it to rewrite as concise bullets, and tell it not to add facts or numbers.
Does AI help get past ATS?
It can help you work in relevant keywords, but formatting matters just as much. See our ATS-friendly resume guide.
Is there a resume builder without AI?
Yes. Plenty of builders, ours included, are non-AI. You write the content and the tool handles the layout.
